I am repeatedly drawn to the complexity and beauty of the microscopic architecture of living organisms.
This work investigates a fascination with elements from both industrial and organic structures. My intention is to capture a sense of ambiguous familiarity within these constructed glass forms. The making of the work describes the rhythm of the pieces. Certain works express organic structural elements. Where the components are incorporated sympathetically into each other. The cross sections of glass perforate the surface of the membranes. These details refract and diffuse light, evocative of microscopic imagery. In other compositions, the reference is sequential and grid like. Set patterns describe a mathematical approach. The structures describe line and folding space. |
I am fascinated by the exquisite architecture of cellular structures. Where elaborate and delicate formations reflect the complexity of organic growth. This diversity of forms in nature and the ability of humans to describe the universe mathematically is a recurring theme within my work.
This sculpture draws upon the ambiguous sense of an artefact, amorphous yet structured. This essentially architectural façade, references the intricacies of microscopic cellular architecture. I envisage continuing this path of sculptural investigation. Within my studio practice I strive to extend the possibilities of the material. From a background in traditional glass blowing, I am hybridising traditional skills with mould making. Continuing to work with organic themes, where the contrasting interior surfaces interact with the solid architectural depths of the glass forms.
